Purchasing A Haven Kennels German Shepherd Puppy
Now that you have decided to share your life with a German Shepherd from The Haven Kennels, it is time to start the application process. Our puppies are very precious to us and we are very careful in placing them in loving forever homes. We do not produce that many puppies each year and always have waiting lists so if you do want one of our pups it is best to start the process as soon as you have made up your mind.
Step One: The Puppy Application
The procedure for purchasing a Haven Kennels puppy starts with filling out a Puppy Application. The link to the downloadable PDF application is at the end of this paragraph. Please be totally honest and candid when you fill out the application. There are no right or wrong answers but the more information that you can give us regarding your hopes and expectations for your puppy, the better we will be able to match the right pup with your family. German Shepherds are a breed that thrives on consistent human companionship so we like to get it right the FIRST time in placing a puppy in their forever home. Although we are willing to take a puppy back if things don’t work out, we want to see every puppy be a success story. Click here to download our PUPPY APPLICATION in pdf format.
Step Two: Application Verification & Chat with Pup Owner(s)
Once you return your application to us, we thoroughly check out all the information on it. I do check with references. I Google Earth your home. I contact the local animal control officer in your community to see if they have had any interactions with you and your pets. When I have determined that you will be a good prospective owner and that you are who you say you are, I will arrange for you to be able to contact an owner from a recent litter so you can chat with them about their experience with their Haven Kennels pup if you would like.
Step Three: Phone Interview with us & Virtual Kennel Visit
Once you let me know that you have spoken to the pup owner and would like to continue the process, I will set up a time for us to talk by phone. It will give me a chance to find out more about your experience with the German Shepherd breed and what you are looking for in a German Shepherd puppy. You can ask me any questions you have that haven’t been answered by our website or by your talk with the pup owner. At this time we can set up a virtual visit with our dogs by way of streaming video on the Periscope app. You can meet the “pack” so you can see how they interact with us and ask questions about the individual breeding dogs.
Step Four: Firm Commitment & Deposit
At this point, it will be time for you to make a decision as to whether you want one of our pups or not. If you do, you will go on our waiting list for a specific litter that you are interested in. You will be placed on the list in chronological order and dependent on your level of commitment. The first 6 spots on the list for a specific litter are given to those clients that make a firm commitment by placing a $500 deposit. The spots are reserved in the order in which the deposits are received. If you chose not to place a deposit but would still like a puppy, you will be put on the reservation list chronologically starting with spot #7. If there are more than 6 pups available you will be notified in chronological order of the reservation list until all available pups are gone. Many breeders (for reasons I have never figured out) insist that deposits are “NON-REFUNDABLE”. Our deposits are refundable with one exception – if I have a healthy, suitable puppy for you that meets the requirements that you had on your application and you decide not to take it, your deposit will not be refunded. If I do not have a puppy for you, your deposit will be refunded or you can choose to apply it to an upcoming litter. The reasons under which the deposit would be returned are if the female fails to get pregnant, miscarries, has less than 6 puppies, has still born puppies – essentially your deposit is returned if I cannot fulfill my obligation of supplying you with a healthy puppy.
